Bhubaneswar to Sarangada · the last stretch is road only
getting here
There is no railway into Kandhamal. Fly to Bhubaneswar and drive — 250 kilometres, most of a day. The nearest railhead is Berhampur, 150 kilometres south.
However you come, the last stretch is road, from the south, past Baliguda. The plain gives way to forest on that drive. It is the first thing the land tells you.
the village
A mixed village along a kilometre of market road. Kondh, Brahmin, Kshatriya and Christian families, the same red soil under all of them. Odia in the market and the school, Kui in the older Kondh homes, Hindi among the young. Pincode 762106.
what to expect
Plain comforts, honestly. You sleep in the village, not beside it. The tea is too sweet. There is no wifi after seven, and nobody minds. Days begin before you are ready and end facing the trees.
who it's for
Anyone who wants a place as it is, not as it is performed. Come for a culture staged for the camera and you will leave disappointed. Come to be absorbed for seven days and this is that.
